Theatre Review

On a Friday afternoon in Biddenham upper school, I watched three different Theatre companies perform Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’. Each only performed the scene in which Othello kills Desdemona after being tricked into thinking she has had an affair with one of his officers. Each company contained male and female actors who played roles within their gender. All three productions used a naturalistic approach, and remained relatively true to how a Shakespearian play would have been performed in the 1700’s.

The first performance was by a professional Shakespearian company who charged their audience to watch their piece. The piece was performed in the round; characterising a typical Shakespearian piece despite the audience being sat down rather than stood. The actors were also miced, meaning they did not have to project vocally as much as an actor would have done so during Shakespeare’s era. Another feature of the company was the female roles being played by actresses rather than actors; in a Shakespearian play the female roles would have still been played by males due to the inequality of genders during the Shakespearian era. There were minimal props on stage, just a bed in the centre to draw focus to the significance of Desdemona’s death. The effect on this meant the audience were drawn into the horrific consequence of Iago’s wicked plan, and felt sympathy towards Desdemona despite her weak effort to defend herself. Othello’s character was also sympathised with due to the actors portray of the character. The actor portrayed Othello to be utterly distraught. The impact of this meant that in spite of Othello murdering his innocent wife, the audience connected with Othello and felt sorry for him.

The others were a load of fucking bollocks and as i was watching i just thought to myself, what the fuck have i done to deserve this unbearable torture? I thought, maybe i don’t give enough to charity? Maybe i have sinned too much? MAYBE ITS BECAUSE I SOMETIMES LISTEN TO SHAGGY. But i concluded that this was not something i had brought on myself; this was pure evil at its worst.

I thought maybe about writing a book, sharing my experience with others who may have had to endure the same torture i had; giving hope to those who may have felt that there was no future for them. These ‘theatre companies’ are destroying lives, BUT I AM NOT PREPARED TO STAND BY AND WATCH THIS HAPPEN.

If you are American YOU HAVE NO RIGHT to perform a Shakespeare piece of theatre- UNLESS YOU CAN DO A DECENT BRITISH ACCENT. And if not, FUCK OFF BECAUSE YOU SOUND LIKE SHIT AND NO ONE CAN ACTUALLY UNDERSTAND WHAT YOURE SAYING AS IF ITS NOT A MISSION TO INTERPRET SHAKESPEARIAN LANGUAGE IN THE GOD DAMN FUCKING FIRST PLACE.
